FOTD: Darling Girl Summer Look

dg summer big As I’ve mentioned before, each month Darling Girl has a contest on their facebook page. To enter, you post a look based on that month’s theme using Darling Girl products. This month’s theme was summer, and this is the look I came up with.

DG summer lookI was going for a sand and water look with my eyeshadow, but I don’t have a true turquoise from Darling Girl, and Lucky pulled greener than I remembered it. Oh well. I also added a bit of pink, because summer should be colorful.

  • Firebird Strawberry Tangerine lip balm

I started by priming my lids. Then I applied Bubbles, a light cream/tan with a blue green sheen, all over my lid. I used That’s a Big Twinkie, a matte tan, in my crease. I lined my upper lashline with black liquid liner and winged it out. I patted Lucky, a white with green shimmer that’s designed to pop over a black base, on top of the liner. However, it didn’t show up as much as I wanted it to, so I went over the line (but not the wing) with pencil liner and patted more Lucky on top. Then I mixed Tit Punch, a bright pink, with Superstar Serum and applied it to my lower lashline with an angled liner brush. I applied mascara and did my usual foundation routine, with a double dose of undereye concealer. I used a coral liquid cheek stain, which I blended in with my fingers. I applied a thin layer of Meloncholy, a bright coral lip lustre, over the top of a balm and blended it with my finger to sheer it out a bit.

I love contests and coming up with looks to fit themes, so I had fun with this. If I had to do it again (and I might), I think I’d do a look with more tropical bright eyeshadow, rather than a look that’s heavy on the eyeliner for color.

FOTD: Glamorous Red and Sparkly Taupe

glamorous red big

Over on r/makeuprehab, they’re doing a lip dare, which means using a different lip product every day for the rest of the month. It sounded like a fun challenge, so I decided to join in. While I use a pretty good rotation of lip colors, it seemed like a good way to encourage myself to give some love to my lesser used lip colors. So in that spirit, today I’m wearing a blue-based red, which I think is pretty, but don’t wear often.

glamorous red look I paired it with a simple sparkly taupe eye, to keep the focus solidly on the lips.

Lips:

  • Fyrinnae Glamorous Rebel

I started by priming my lids (but with a different primer than usual). I then applied a wash of Jeweled Taupe, a sparkly light taupey tan, all over my lids. I applied Atlas, a matte brown, in the crease and below my lower lashes and blended it in a lot to soften the lines. I lined my eyes with a brown-black pencil liner and applied mascara. I did my usual face stuff, with a warm rosy blush. I finished with Glamorous Rebel, a blue toned red lip lustre, which I applied with the doefoot.

I think it’s worth noting that I don’t always put my looks up on the blog the same day I do them, so my blog posts might not reflect the lip dare perfectly. (For example, I technically started the dare yesterday with a post that’s going up later this week, since yesterday was the Planetary Challenge.) But I’m keeping track of what I use, and at the end of the Lip Dare challenge I’ll post a round up of all fifteen lip colors.

FOTD: Psylocke Inspired Black and Purple Look

Psylocke bigSo I’m still figuring out my camera, but I’m making some progress on getting pictures to come out actually me-colored. (Although I didn’t color correct these cuz I was lazy and therefore they’re a bit too yellow.) Anyways, I’m hoping to be blogging more regularly again now. This was my look for Darling Girl’s monthly contest. This month, the theme was superheroes, so I did a look based on Psylocke, one of my favorite X-Men. I’m really happy with the theme, because I love superheroes and it inspired me to start reading some comics again. in 2013 they started a new X-Men series (which is just called X-Men, no adjective or anything) that focuses on an all-female X-Men team, which is what got me to start reading comics in the first place. Yay female superheroes!

psylocke lookPsylocke’s black and purple thing comes off a bit more supervillain than superhero, though. But she’s a good guy.

I started by applying NYX Black Bean to my mobile lid and blending it in with my finger. It was way slipperier than NYX Milk and wound up kind of everywhere, so I tidied the edges with a q-tip and smudged some under my lower lashes. I patted Indigo, a shimmery purple that shows up over a black base, on top. I used a pencil brush to darken the outer corner and crease with Pornstache, a dark shimmery grey. I applied both Indigo and Pornstache to my lower lashline as well, with Indigo in the inner portion and Pornstache in the outer half. I used Duct Tape Couture, a lighter gray with a pink sheen, to highlight the inner corner. I applied black liquid liner with a strong wing along my upper lashes, and lined my lower lashes with black pencil liner. I curled my lashes and applied mascara. I applied my foundation and powder. I wound up layering two different blushes, a reddish tan and a pinky plum. For my lips, I started by applying Passionfruit, a dark purple balm, all over with a doe foot. Then I used a doefoot to line my lips with B.S., an opaque black. I tried to blend them together, but the black was dominating the purple. So I used my finger to dab Passionflower, a bright light purple, in the middle of my lips and blended to get a gradient.

Not my tidiest look, but I had fun with it, and it feels good to be doing some more creative looks again. During my blog-hiatus I mostly wore pretty low-key make up.

FOTD: Darling Girl Lucky

lucky big Darling Girl has a collection of Rainbow Brite shadows, which are white with different color sparkle, designed to really pop over a black base. I have samples of two of them, and today I decided to try out Lucky, a turquoise/green shade.

Lucky look To really test out the dual nature of this shadow, I applied it both over primer on my lid and over black eyeliner.

Face:

  • Benefit Boi-ing Concealer in 1
  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Light
  • Bare Minerals Beauty Blush

Lips:

  • MAC Sea Sheer

I started by priming my lids, then I used a black pencil liner to draw a thick line along my upper lashes. I patted Lucky, a sparkly shadow that looks white but is actually green, over the top. I concentrated the color on the top of the liner, but extended it up to my crease, where I blended it out with a clean brush. I used a liner brush to apply some on my lower water line as well. I curled my lashes and applied mascara. They was tons of glittery fallout, so I cleaned it up with some make up remover and did my face make up, blush and lipstick.

I think the two-in-one nature of this shadow is pretty cool, although I wish it showed up a teensy bit better over a nude base. But it really does make an amazing color over a black base, and I’m pretty sure that’s how I’ll mostly use it. Plus, I have a soft spot for Rainbow Brite, so it reminds me of my childhood, which is fun too. (And my not-so-childhood as well. Last time I visited my sister, we definitely had a nostalgia night where we ate too much candy and watched Rainbow Brite.)

Do you have any make up themed after things you loved as a kid? Were you into Rainbow Brite, like I was? Indigo was by far my favorite, and so the Indigo color was other other shade I picked up. I’m looking forward to trying it out.

FOTD: Darling Girl’s Springy Pastels

squat and cough Each month Darling Girl has a looks contest on their Facebook group, where everyone creates a look around a specific theme using Darling Girl colors. For April, the theme is spring, with soft and sparkly colors, and this is the look I did for it. I’m really digging the springtime pastels these days.

squat and cough 1 To make the look a little more interesting, I used a different color for the lower waterline and inner corner, which is a fun pop of (very pale) color.

I primed my lids like usual and then applied Pixie Epoxy with my pinkie. I waited 15-20 seconds for it to set and then patted Squat and Cough, a sparkly lavender pink, all over my lids. I deepened the outer corner with Break the Internet, a matte peachy brown. I used a tiny brush to apply Taystee Girl, a pastel blue with a pinkish sheen, to my lower waterline. I used the same brush to apply Bubbles, a light tan with a blue green sheen, to the inner corner. Then I lined my eyes with black liner, curled my lashes and applied mascara. I did my face makeup with pink blush, nude lipstick and pink gloss.

I’m really happy with this look. I really like Break the Internet as a deepening color, the look became so much more together once I added it. I’m definitely considering picking up a mini next time I order from Darling Girl. Also, I absolutely love the Marc Jacobs eyeliner, which is different than my numerous other black eyeliners because it’s a gel in pencil form and gives a very clean looking line. I use it when I want a similar look to liquid liner but no wing. It’s super easy to apply and I think it looks fantastic. However, it’s also horrendously expensive. Mine right now is a mini size that I got in an eyeliner sampler from Sephora and I hate that I like it enough that I’m debating actually buying one. Stupid fancy pants brands and their high quality making me want them. Anyways, I like it. But I’m definitely going to use up every last millimeter of my mini before I decide whether I want to replace it.

Do you ever fall in love with ridiculously expensive products you get samples of? How often do samples convince you to buy larger sizes?

FOTD: Bright and Springy Turquoise and Coral Look

turquoise and coralWhen I was trying out my new lip lustres, I wanted to do something bright and springy for Meloncholy, a bright coral orange. So I paired it with matching blush and sparkly turquoise blue liner. So much fun!

turquoise and coral lookThese are some of my favorite colors, and I can pretend I’m in North America and it’s spring now by wearing them!

For this look I primed my lids and applied Bubbles, a light tan shadow with a blue green sheen, all over my lid. I mixed Bulletssssss!, a sparkly bright blue, with superstar serum and applied it as winged liner. I patted a little bit of dry shadow over the top of the line for added sparkle. Then I curled my lashes and put on mascara. I did my face like usual, but used a small contour brush to very lightly pat Gelato Beach, a very bright coral blush, onto my cheeks. Then I applied Meloncholy, a bright coral orange lip lustre, with the doe foot.

I love this look, but it’s definitely bright. Bubbles is a gorgeous color and the sheen goes so nicely with the bright blue liner, although it doesn’t show up very strongly in pictures. Also, the tones of Gelato Beach and Meloncholy match so well! I’ll definitely use them together again. Do you have any great indie make up pairings?

Darling Girl My Three Witches Collection: Looks

Re-Witched, Love’s a Witch, Witch Way Now, Hell Hath No Fury, Painted World / The Apocalypse, Not, Woogy, Just Harried, Blinded by the Whitelighter, Scry Harder

Yesterday I posted my swatches of Darling Girl’s My Three Witches collection . Today it’s time for the looks. This collection is very cohesive, in that all the colors are sparkly but somewhat subdued (especially when applied over just primer), so all the looks are in a similar vein, which should make them easy to wear.

DSCN5441Look 1: Hell Hath No Fury, Witch Way Now, Just Harried and The Apocalypse, Not

MTW Look 1For this, I primed my lids then patted Witch Way Now all over the lid. I placed Hell Hath No Fury in the outer corner/crease and blended. I used Just Harried to highlight under my brow and mixed The Apocalypse, Not with superstar serum and applied it to my lower lashline. I finished with dark brown liquid liner, drawn with a strong wing, and mascara.

DSCN5493Look 2: The Apocalypse, Not, Just Harried and Re-Witched

MTW Look 2 2I primed my eyes, including beneath and then patted Pixie Epoxy on top of my lids. I covered the Pixie Epoxy with The Apocalypse, Not, and used a pencil brush to apply some to the lower lashline as well. I blended out the edges using Just Harried and patted Re-Witched onto the inner corner. Then I lined my entire eye with black pencil liner and smudged it out with a brush. I used some of the liner on my brush to darken the outer corners. Then I finished with lots of black mascara.

Look 3: Woogy and Scry Harder

MTW Look 3This is an attempt at a very subtle halo eye. I patted Scry Harder into the center of my primed lids, and applied Woogy to the inner and outer corners and blended it up towards the middle. I used a clean blending brush to soften the edges. I lined my eyes with pencil liner to finish it off.

DSCN5756Look 4: Just Harried and Love’s a Witch

MTW Look 4For this, I applied primer and then patted Just Harried over the lid. I applied Love’s a Witch to the outer corner and blended. Then I finished with black winged liner and mascara. Easy and simple.

DSCN5438Look 2: Painted World and Blinded by the Whitelighter

MTW Look 5I started by priming my lids. Then I applied Blinded by the Whitelighter all over the lid. Next I added Painted World to the outer corner and blended. I lined my eyes with a shimmery dark grey pencil liner and smudged it out with a brush. Then I applied Blinded by the Whitelighter to my lower waterline. I curled my lashes and put on mascara. This look feels Cinderella-y to me.My Three Witches Looks 2Those are my five My Three Witches looks. All of them are pretty classic and easy to wear. The second one’s my favorite, because it’s the boldest and I love the hidden purple glitter in The Apocalypse, Not. Also, I’m just on a smoky eye kick right now. Which one’s your favorite?
