FOTD: Sparkly Teal Liner

teal liner bigThis is a look I photographed awhile ago and forgot to put up on my blog. I wore this to one of the days of my conference, and I thought it was a nice balance of interesting and not drawing too much attention to itself. I got compliments on it, too!

teal liner lookSparkly champagne and turquoise/teal are pretty much my two favorite eyeshadow colors, so of course I like this.

Eyes:

  • Shiro Doge
  • Notoriously Morbid Jupiter Rain
  • Darling Girl Superstar Serum
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • Buxom Lash Mascara

Face:

  • MAC Face and Body in N1
  • Laura Mercier Secret Concealer in 1
  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Light
  • Tarte Blissful (I think. I didn’t write it down.)

Lips:

  • Kae Q Mamey

I started by applying primer to my lids and sweeping Doge, a sparkly champagne, on top. I mixed Superstar Serum with Jupiter Rain, a sparkly teal, to make a paste and applied it with a liner brush, winging it out at the outer corners, and lightly lining the outer half of my lower lashline. I applied mascara and I did my usual face stuff. I finished the look with Mamey, an orangey coral balm that I applied with a doe foot.

I don’t have much to say about this one, except I wish I’d put on a little more concealer. Good lord I look tired.

FOTD: A Sparkly Coral Pink Look

coral bigI built this look around Hello Waffle’s Fey, a color that’s right on the border between peach and pink gold. I love it, but I’ve got it in a mini instead of a sample baggie and so sometimes I forget I own it when I’m leafing through my eyeshadows. But I’m glad I found it, because it’s just so pretty.

coral lookI love pinky peachy coral looks. Besides Fey everything else is pretty monochromatic.

I primed my lids, then patted Fey, a golden peach with a hint of pink, all over my lids. I placed Shoes to Kill For, a hot pink, in the outer corner and blended it in until it was diffused. I put some under my lower lashes as well. I lined my upper lashes with black liquid liner and winged it out. I lightly lined my lower water line with pencil liner also. I did my usual face stuff and placed Gelato Beach, a bright coral pink blush, on my cheeks using a contour blush and blended it out with a clean blush brush. I finished off with It’s Called Love, a bright coral pink tinted balm.

As, I said before, I’m super happy with this look. Fey is just a gorgeous color and I really want to do better about remembering it. Do you have any colors you love but forget about?

Mars Inspired Look for IMAM Planet Collaboration

mars big Some of us over on r/indiemakeupandmore decided to do a collaboration based on planets. I chose Mars as my planet. Mars is obviously the red planet, and when I think of it, I think of dusty dry red/orange rocks, so I did a mostly matte look with a lot of reds and red orange. mars wearable look I initially did a more avant garde version sans the winged liner, but it was a bit too in your face red without anything to balance it out. So I added some winged liner to make it a touch more wearable. mars close up w A close up of the eye make up, side by side with an inspiration picture I found when googling Mars. mars wearable glassesRed glasses for a red planet look! I’m really shocked by just how much the glasses tone things down. Mars productsEyes:

Lips:

  • Kae Q Sapodilla
  • Kae Q Mango

Before I did my eyes I applied foundation and set it with powder. Then I started my eye make up by applying primer to my entire eye area, including under my lashes. I patted Fire Pledge, a matte red orange, all over my lids, up past my crease. I applied it more heavily down near my lashes and more lightly as I went up. I dabbed what was left on my brush under my lower lashes. Then I used a fluffy angled brush to apply Little Mermaid, a slightly orangey red with a touch of shimmer, to my crease. I used a liner brush to apply Boca Del Infierno, a matte burgundy red, to my upper and lower lashlines. I used a small brush to apply a dot of Cortexiphan, a red satin, to my inner corners, like a highlight except red. I used a fluffy blending brush to blend around the edges of my eyeshadow. I blended out the edges a lot. I applied mascara and was going to leave it at that, but it was a bit too out there so I added brown liquid liner on both my upper and lower lashlines with a small wing at the corner. I filled in my brows as well. For my cheeks I used Beau, a sort of reddish brown matte eyeshadow, and picked a tiny bit up with my contour blush and blended it into my cheeks as a combo blush/contour. Then for my lips I started with a base of Sapodilla, my perfect nude, and dotted Mango, an orangey red, on top and blended them with my fingers.

FOTD: Colorful Grungy Look

colorful grungy big This was one of those looks that sort of developed as it went. I had no plan when I sat down to do my makeup, but then the bright magenta of Red Shoes caught my eye. From there I added green and purple, but it didn’t quite work until I piled on lots of smudgy black liner. I like the way it looks very dark, but if you catch it at the right angle or see me blink, then there’s actually a lot of bright color.

colorful grungy lookOf course dark smudgy eyes call for nude lips.

  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in LIght
  • Notoriously Morbid Sadist

I started by priming my lids and then applied Red Shoes, a bright magenta, to the inner half of my lids. I applied Gerda, a shimmery purple, to the outer half, overlapping in the middle. Then I used a fluffy angled brush to layer Chinese Puzzle, a dark green, over the purple in the outer corner. The green wasn’t showing up as much as I liked, so I patted JK Meowling, a shimmery greenish turquoise, over the top, bringing it down and in over the purple. I lined my upper lashes heavily with black pencil liner and smudged it out with a brush. I ran the brush underneath my lower lashes to transfer the liner that was left on the bristles there. I also used the liner on the brush to darken the outer corners, bringing it up slightly into the crease. Then I lined my lower waterline with a shimmery dark green liner. I applied mascara as well. I did my face with foundation, concealer and powder and applied Sadist, a magenta blush, along my cheeks with a contour blush. I blended it in with a clean blush brush. I finished the look with Sapodilla, a nude beso balm that I applied with a doefoot applicator.

I don’t wear grungy messy eyeliner often, but when I do, I always enjoy it. I like pairing it with the colorful shadow. And Sapodilla is my perfect nude lip color. I love it with dark eye looks.

FOTD: Elegant Evening Look with Mulberry Lips

mulberry passion big 2When I swatched Kae Q’s Mulberry, I knew it called for a simple, but sophisticated eye look, so the focus could stay on the lips. Looking around my make up table, Notoriously Morbid’s Passion caught my eye. I opened up the jar and realized there were the most lovely little warm sparks in a cool grey base. I’d found the shadow for the look. Simple, but with a little something special.

mulberry passion lookI feel like I should be wearing an elegant gown and going to a fancy event. But with neater hair.

I started by priming my lids like usual. I applied Passion, a sparkly cool grey with a ton of tiny sparks, all over my lids. I used a darker matte grey shadow to deepen my crease and a soft white matte shadow to highlight my brown bone. I lined my eyes with a dark brown pencil liner and smudges it with a brush. I curled my lashes and put on mascara. I did my face like usual and applied a little bit of pinky tan blush to my cheeks. I finished by putting on Mulberry, a deep warm berry red, to my lips using a doefoot applicator.

I was expecting Mulberry to be a bit cooler toned than it actually is, but I really like it. So far it’s my favorite of the darker beso balms, because it’s formula doesn’t get streaky and I think it’s a really flattering color for my complexion. It’s just dark enough to read as deep without being full on vampy, and I can see myself wearing it a bunch.

Also, just a heads up that my camera died, so I won’t be able to take pictures and post new looks until I get it replaced. I tried using my ipod and it just did not work. So there’ll probably be a little break in my posting schedule.

FOTD: Mint Green Eyes and Berry Lips

dust to dust big I asked my husband what color eyeshadow I should wear, and he said mint. Looking through my stash, I realized that I only have one mint eyeshadow, which surprised me! Dust to Dust from Notoriously Morbid’s Slay Me collection is a matte, minty grey-green and the only shadow I used in this look.

dust to dust look To go with the mint shadow, I did a classic cat eye and a bold berry pink lip.

I primed my lids with a shimmery primer. I was kind of curious to see if it would show through the matte shadow, but it didn’t. Then I applied Dust to Dust, a pale greyish green, all over my lids, and faded it up towards my browbone. I applied winged black liquid liner and mascara and finished my eyes with a little silver liner along my lower waterline to brighten my eyes. I did my face like usual, and applied a berry colored cheek stain and a bright berry pink lip pencil.

I love this! I’ve been realizing lately that despite my initial aversion to bright lip colors, I actually love them paired with pale eyeshadow and a cat eye, and this is no exception. It makes me feel classic and pretty, but with a a slight twist from my usual classic look.

FOTD: Green and Blue Earth Day Look

earth day big

My final IMAM sample challenge came from /u/smilingsunbeams, aka Crimson and Clovher, who suggested I use Notoriously Morbid’s Hesitant Heroine and Hello Waffle’s Beneath Oxfordshire together. Since they’re both such intense colors, I set them aside while I worked through the rest of my challenge pairings. Then it occurred to me that Earth Day was coming up. Green and blue would be perfect for an Earth Day look.

Earth Day 1 I used a similar technique to the one I learned from Crimson and Clovher’s Queen of Hearts Tutorial and used Pixie Epoxy to make the green pop in the inner corner.

earth day 2 Close up of the blue-green goodness.

To start, I primed my lids, including under my lower lashline. I patted Hesitant Heroine, a bright matte blue, all over my lids, flaring it up at the outer corners. Hesitant Heroine is a surprisingly buildable shadow, so I made sure the color was the most concentrated nearest to my lashes and more diffused up by my crease. I also applied some along my lower lashline and connected it at the outer corners. I lightly dabbed at the edges with the last of the shadow on my brush so that the edges of the blue faded gracefully. Then I used my pinkie to dab some Pixie Epoxy onto the inner third or so of my eyelids. After it set, I patted Beneath Oxfordshire, a shimmery forrest green, on top with a fluffy brush. I patted around the edges until the colors looked blended. I also applied a little to my inner corner/tear duct area. I mixed a bit with Superstar Serum and applied it to my waterline with an eyeliner brush as well. I curled my lashes and applied mascara to both my upper and lower lashes. Then I cleaned up the fall out. (And my lord was there a lot of fall out from Hesitant Heroine. Pretty much my whole face was covered in blue blotches. I needed make up remover, tissues and several q-tips to remove it all.) I did my foundation, concealer and powder and then used a very pale shimmery blush and lightly contoured with bronzer. I finished with a golden gloss.

I really like these types of smoky intense looks and I think it’s neat to have shimmer at the inner corner over a matte base, so I’m glad the technique is a part of my repertoire now. The green and the blue blended into each other surprisingly well, and definitely had the sort of globe-y vibe I was going for. The combination also made my eyes look more blue-green than their usual straight blue, which I thought was neat. Definitely a success!
