FOTD: Brown and Copper Halo Eye

Brown and Copper Halo 1In the interest of doing more halo eyes in March, let’s start this off with the first halo eye look I ever did. (This is from January, but somehow I didn’t post it. Oops. From this point on, everything is from the perspective of January-me, so a bit outdated.) I recently discovered that the thing you do where you put a lighter color of eyeshadow in the center of your eye and a darker color on either side of it is called a halo eye. So here’s a halo eye, with some brown and coppery Shiro shadows.

Brown and Copper HaloI used a very pretty brown all over my lid, with a coppery color in the middle and bronze in the inner corner and along the lower lashline.

Brown and Copper Halo 2I did not like this look at all after I’d finished with the shadows. So I added a highlight color in the inner corner and patted a bit in the center of the lid to brighten things up a bit and piled on the mascara. Still, it didn’t work at all until I’d added the blush and lipstick. And then, all of a sudden, I loved it.

I started with Urban Decay Primer in Eden, which I’m testing a sample of. The I smudged Getting Wood, a lovely basic brown, all over the mobile lid, extending it up and out at the outer corners. I put the tiniest dot of Pixie Epoxy on my pinky and dabbed it onto the center of each lid. I waited a second for it to dry a little, then patted Full of Craft, a golden brown with a reddish sheen, over the top. With the Pixie Epoxy it wound up looking coppery. Then I used a pencil brush to apply You Dropped Your Rod, a dark bronze, to the inner corner. I also applied it to the outer 3/4 of my lower lashline, and connected it to the brown at the outer corners. I blended the edges of my eyeshadow out with Bare from Stila’s In the Light Palette, which is a matte that matches my skintone. I applied Twice Baked, a shimmery red-based brown eyeliner to the outer part of the lower lashline, and Damsel, a black-brown, along the upper lashline. I smudged both of these out with a brush, curled my lashes and applied several coats of mascara. At this point my face looked really weird, and the whole thing wasn’t working at all, so I got out Doge, one of my favorite highlights and put it my tear ducts. I also patted the tiniest bit on top the the eyeshadow at the very center of my lids using my finger, to lighten it and make it look more Halo-y. Then I did my usual face stuff. I used Tarte’s Exposed blush, a pinky-browny-nude that I love and suddenly the whole look came together. I finished with MAC’s Patisserie lipstick, my favorite nude lipstick.

This was one of those looks I’m really glad I stuck with, cuz in the middle it looked awful, but by the end it came together really nicely. I tend to get bored with more neutral colors, but the halo techniques livens it up and makes it a bit more interesting.

FOTD: Ravenclaw Blue and Bronze

DSCN4559Ravenclaw time! With book colors! (I don’t get why they changed the bronze to silver for the movies. Yes, blue and silver is pretty. But it’s wrong. And if anyone was going to catch that it’s wrong, it’s bookish Ravenclaws. Nonsense.) I am totally and unapologetically a Ravenclaw for life, and a supporter of the blue and bronze.

RavenclawBecause blue and bronze are not the easiest colors to mix together, I put coppery bronze on the lid and used the blue as liner.

I started by priming both under and over my eyes. I then applied Bartok, a bright copper, all over the mobile lid. I added Belly, a darker copper, to the outer corners and all the way around the crease. I also applied Belly beneath my lower lashes. Then I mixed Hesitant Heroine, a matte bright dark blue, with Superstar Serum to form a paste. I applied it to the upper lashline, winging it out at the corners, and then worked down from the underside of the wing along the lower lashes. I went back in and made sure the connection at the corner was all the way filled in. Then I took a little bit of Treasure Map, a golden bronze, and applied it to my tearducts. I added mascara, a warm coral blush and finished with lip gloss.

I really like how this turned out. Before I added the liner I looked like a crazy person who’d drawn a circle around my eyes with an orange crayon, but the liner really brought it together. It’s not as dramatic as yesterday’s Gryffindor look, but Ravenclaws are less flashy anyways.
