Harry Potter Themed Looks

harry potter 1Over the past week, I’ve created four Harry Potter-themed looks, from the dark and witchy Slytherin to the bright and cheery Hufflepuff. Here they are all together in one post, for posterity’s sake, with links to the original posts for more details. Gryffindor 2Gryffindor: Hello Waffle Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi and Rachmaninoff Ravenclaw 2Ravenclaw: Hello Waffle Bartok and Belly, Notoriously Morbid Hesitant Heroine Slytherin 2Slytherin: Shiro Huntress and Hello Waffle Envy Hufflepuff 2Hufflepuff: Darling Girl Dandelion, Shiro Cornucopia, Notoriously Morbid Bloody Awful Poet What do you think about themed make up? Which is your favorite? And, if you’re a Harry Potter fan like me, which house are you? I’m Ravenclaw all the way! Although, to be honest, the Hufflepuff look might have been my favorite. Who knew yellow eyeshadow could make me feel so pretty?

FOTD: Hufflepuff Yellow and Black

DSCN4767And now for Hufflepuff. The “we don’t really know what defines you, so no metallics for you” house. This youtube video pretty much sums it up. And also is hilarious. Anyways, basic black and yellow for the Hufflepuffs. Nice and simple.

HufflepuffI really like the way the yellow brings out the blue of my eyes. Plus it makes me feel super cheery and smiley (although that might also have been caused by thinking “I can’t digest lactose. I’m a Hufflepuff!” Seriously, go watch the video).

I started by priming my eyes and patting Dandelion, a bright yellow, all over my lid. Next I took Cornucopia, a goldenrod yellow, and applied it to the outer part of my crease using an angled brush. To keep it Hufflepuff, try to use something that’s not too metallic/gold. You want to read yellow. Then I drew a winged line on my upper lashes. I used a liner brush to apply Bloody Awful Poet, a matte black to my lower lashline. Then I added mascara, but it didn’t look finished, so I used my angled brush to apply some Cornucopia underneath the wing and the outer corner of the lower lashline. I did my face make up as usual, with peachy pink blush and corally pink tinted balm.

I liked this more than I thought I would. The yellow is bright and cheery and looks great with blue eyes, and I always love a clean winged liner. The simplicity seems very Hufflepuff-appropriate. I really liked the way Bloody Awful Poet worked on the lower lashline. I might have to start using shadow instead of liner on my lower lashes more often.

FOTD: Slytherin Silver and Green

DSCN4614Look number three in my Harry Potter House series: Slytherin. Also, my first attempt at a cut crease. I think it turned out pretty decent. I’m totally not a Slytherin, but I think this look gets the vibe right.

SlytherinDark witchy lips.

First I primed my eyes, then I traced a line along my crease with a green metallic liner. I blended the liner into my crease with a brush. Then I used my pinky to dab Pixie Epoxy below the liner and let it set for a second. I patted Huntress, a silver, over the Pixie Epoxy. Then I used a pencil brush to apply Envy, a dark green, along the liner, flaring it up at the outer corners. I also applied some along the lower lashes. Then I lined my upper lashes with black liquid liner and finished with a strong wing. I applied some along the outer half of my lower lashes as well, connecting at the corners. I then lined my lower waterline with silver eyeliner, going around my inner corner to the very inner part of my upper lashline. I lined below my bottom lashes with the green eyeliner and blended it in with a brush. I curled my lashes and applied mascara. Then I applied foundation and concealer. I applied a pink blush with silver shimmer, and then put my setting powder all over the top of everything. I finished with A Girl and A Cat, a dark purple tinted balm.

This feels witchy and slightly goth but flamboyant at the same time, which seems appropriate for Slytherin. It makes me want to experiment with cut creases, because I’m not sure I did it right, but I like how it looks anyways. Tomorrow, last but not least (ok let’s be honest, they’re kind of the least…) Hufflepuff!

FOTD: Ravenclaw Blue and Bronze

DSCN4559Ravenclaw time! With book colors! (I don’t get why they changed the bronze to silver for the movies. Yes, blue and silver is pretty. But it’s wrong. And if anyone was going to catch that it’s wrong, it’s bookish Ravenclaws. Nonsense.) I am totally and unapologetically a Ravenclaw for life, and a supporter of the blue and bronze.

RavenclawBecause blue and bronze are not the easiest colors to mix together, I put coppery bronze on the lid and used the blue as liner.

I started by priming both under and over my eyes. I then applied Bartok, a bright copper, all over the mobile lid. I added Belly, a darker copper, to the outer corners and all the way around the crease. I also applied Belly beneath my lower lashes. Then I mixed Hesitant Heroine, a matte bright dark blue, with Superstar Serum to form a paste. I applied it to the upper lashline, winging it out at the corners, and then worked down from the underside of the wing along the lower lashes. I went back in and made sure the connection at the corner was all the way filled in. Then I took a little bit of Treasure Map, a golden bronze, and applied it to my tearducts. I added mascara, a warm coral blush and finished with lip gloss.

I really like how this turned out. Before I added the liner I looked like a crazy person who’d drawn a circle around my eyes with an orange crayon, but the liner really brought it together. It’s not as dramatic as yesterday’s Gryffindor look, but Ravenclaws are less flashy anyways.

FOTD: Gryffindor Red and Gold

DSCN3455bThis is my favorite look from my Musicians Collection review, mostly because it was such a surprise how much I liked it, but also partly because my inner bookworm loves how much it screams Harry Potter. (The rest of the Houses will be coming soon.) I was looking through my stack of sample bags and I thought to myself “oooh, what if I put the red and gold together?” but honestly, I was expecting it be one of those “I tried. I guess I’ll go wash my face now” looks. But I loved it. The formula on these eyeshadows is so good that blending them was a dream, even with a fairly extreme color-switch. Hello Waffle wins for sure.

GryffindorPlus, it encouraged me to break out the red lipstick, and I’m definitely trying to find ways to wear bright lips more often.

I started by priming my lids. Then I placed Vivaldi, a bright sparkly red, along the edge of my outer corner. Usually I work from the inner corners of my eye out when I do my eyeshadow, but because the red is so bright, I thought it would be better to put it on first. Then I used a flat brush to apply Tchaikovsky, a gold, starting at the inner corner and working my way to the red, not going past my crease. I added a little to the inner corner section of my lower lashline as well. At this point I stopped and said “huh, I think this’ll actually work.” Then I patted the excess red off my brush and very, very lightly blended it into the rest of my crease. Then I took a clean blending brush and went back and forth over the area where the red and gold shadows met and along my crease. I mixed Rachmaninoff, a dark matte brown, with Superstar Serum, and used an angled brush to apply it as liner, winging it out on the top, and lightly lining the bottom, skipping the very inner part, and connecting it to the top line at the outer corners. I curled my lashes and applied mascara. At this point, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the rest of my face, and decided to go all in on the red and finished with red blush and red lipstick.

I love how well this came together, and how blue the red and gold make my eyes look. I’m not quite sure where I would wear this look other than just around the house or with my husband, but I kinda want to find an event for it. Also, now that I’ve created a Gryffindor look, I’m starting a little Harry Potter House Series, so keep your eyes peeled for Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff looks.
