FOTD: Lavender Eyes and Dark Purple Lips

purple lip bigMy starting point for this look was the lip color. I knew I wanted to try out my dark purple beso balm, but I wasn’t sure what sort of eye look to match it with. I was rifling through my shadows when a lavender caught my eye. I figured a lavender smoky eye would complement the purple lips without being too intense.

purple lip lookI think it worked nicely, although the shadows are a little bit cooler toned than the lips. Next time I might try warm purple eyeshadow instead.

I started my priming my eyelids and then patted Sweetest Voice, a lavender, on my lids up, stopping at my crease. I blended out my crease using Daughters of the Air, a beige. Then I pushed As Above, Below, a blueish grey, into the outer v and both lashlines. I lined my eyes with grey pencil liner, blended it out and finished with mascara. I did my usual foundation routine and used a plummy blush on my cheeks. I lined around the outside of my lips with a nude pencil and blended it in with my finger. Then I used a doefoot to apply Passionfruit, a dark purple balm.

I really like the formula of the beso balms, although this one was the trickiest of the three I’ve tried so far, probably because the color’s so deep. It’s not 100% opaque (which isn’t a surprise, because it’s a balm, not a lipstick), but it makes it a little bit tricky to get perfectly even coverage. It’s super comfortable to wear (like a really nice non-tinted lip balm, which makes me want to try Kae Q’s regular balm) but it doesn’t have much staying power. I ate a snack and when I was done all that was left was a faded line around the outside of my lips. But, on the plus side, it didn’t stain, so it was super easy to wipe off the ring with a tissue and my lips looked totally normal. I definitely wouldn’t recommend wearing this if you know you’re going to be eating, though. The color’s pretty much exactly like a non-sheer version of Shiro’s A Girl and a Cat tinted balm, which is kinda neat.

Do you wear dark purple lipstick? What do you pair it with?

FOTD: Blue Eyes and Lips Dare

blue dare This Saturday over on /r/indiemakeupandmore it was round two of Indie Truth or Dare. /u/_HappyG_ dared me to do blue eyes and lips, so I did! It turned out to be trickier than I expected, because as it turns out almost none of my blue shadows are lip safe (and my Kae Q Indigo is still in the mail). The only two I had, Shiro’s Rebellion and Hello Waffle’s IMAM, were both dark metallic navy, so that’s what I had to do. I also used Shiro’s Glowstick of Destiny, which is a light blue with a gold duochrome overlay, which I love but don’t use very often.blue dare look Blue. Lots of blue. blue dare shadowsEyes:

So for this I actually started with the lips, since I wasn’t sure how they were going to turn out. I started with a layer of waxy lip balm and then patted IMAM, a lip safe navy, over the top with a concealer brush. No matter how much I applied, it just wasn’t getting opaque enough, so I switched to Rebellion, another lip safe navy. I used the same brush to apply Rebellion, which was much more opaque. I evened it out with my finger and tidied up the edges (which were crazy messy) with q-tips and makeup remover. Then I did my eyes. I primed my lids and applied Pixie Epoxy with my pinkie. After it had set, I patted Glowstick of Destiny, a light blue with a gold duochrome, over the top. I mixed Rebellion with Superstar Serum and applied it as liner with a small wing. I applied some to my lower lashes for balance. I curled my lashes and did my face make up. I used a sparkly pink blush to keep myself from looking too dead. To be honest, I didn’t love this look. I had fun trying it, but the navy was just too dark on my lips and didn’t read as very blue. I also forgot just how much of the gold duochrome from Glowstick of Destiny shows through liners mixed with Superstar Serum. I think if the navy had showed up more on my eyes, it might have seemed more balanced. I had fun anyways! And it’s totally in keeping with the spirit of a dare to try something I wouldn’t have otherwise!

FOTD: Brown Monochromatic Dare

brown dare lookOver on IMAM, I started an Indie Truth or Dare thread, where everyone could ask for a truth or a dare and get asked a questions or challenged to do a look. I wound up getting three dares, which I combined into this one triple dare look. /u/undiestakr dared me to choose my least favorite eyeshadow color and do a monochrome look with it, /u/eraser_dust (of Working with Monolids) dared me to wear a lip safe eyeshadow as a lip color and /u/sierrahraine dared me to do an ombre lip. So I decided to do a monochrome look using my least favorite eyeshadow color on my eyes and as an ombre lip. My first instinct when I thought “least favorite eyeshadow color” was blue, but blue’s actually a color. Brown doesn’t even have that going for it. So it gets the place of honor as my least favorite just through sheer boringness.

brown dare 1All in all, I was happy with how my look turned out, although the lips weren’t quite as ombre as I was hoping for.

Lips:

  • Lush Honey Trap

As always I primed my lids first. Then I patted Bach, a reddish brown all over my lids. I applied Phillip, a darker brown, to the outer corner and flared it up a bit. I also put some on my lower lashline. Then I deepened the outer V with Rachmaninoff, a matte dark brown. I lined my eyes with shimmery brown liner, curled my lashes and applied lots of mascara. Then I did my foundation, concealer and powder. I applied a light reddish brown blush to my cheeks and used a blush brush to tap some Bach over the top to darken it. I applied Phillip as a contour and blended it out with a clean brush. Then I did my lips. I started by applying a thick layer of waxy balm. Then I patted Phillip on with an eyeshadow brush, concentrating on the outer edges of my lips. I patted Bach onto the middle of my lips and tried to blend the two together. I used my finger to pat a little more into the very center of my lower lip. I used a q-tip to clean up the edges.

I’m discovering that I really like darker metallic eyeshadows on my lips. Both this and the grey I did in February turned out to be colors I really liked on me. I felt surprisingly sophisticated wearing this. Plus, the homemade lip color held up shockingly well through a meal. I had some pesto pasta and expected it to be gone when I was done, but it still looked presentable. I was impressed.

Also, the mods of IMAM liked the Indie Truth or Dare idea so much that they’ve decided to make it recur monthly! I’m looking forward to more make up dares in the future.

FOTD: Monochromatic Monday Metallic Grey

Monochromatic Metallic GreyToday my favorite subreddit, /r/indieislandofmisfits, is doing a monochromatic make up challenge. I decided to join in. Last week when I did my grey and teal smoky eye, I felt like an alien robot, but didn’t exactly look like one. So today I decided to actually do robot make up! Metallic grey and silver for the win!

Monochromatic Metallic Grey collageI’m pale enough that this looks almost Pleasantville-y. I like it. If I owned white powder, I would have used it. I love the black and white picture effect.

  • Lush Honey Trap lip balm

For this, I actually started with my lips. I applied my Lush lip balm and then used a lip brush to pat Machine, a lip safe metallic grey eyeshadow, on top. Next I did my face. I applied my usual foundation and concealer but no powder. I used a contour brush to sweep Eternity, a dark silver-grey, under my cheek bones, and then used a blush brush to apply Magic Mirror, a light sparkly silver to my cheeks. Last, I did my eyes. I primed my lids and applied a light wash of Magic Mirror. I lined my upper and lower lashes with a metallic dark grey pencil and applied mascara. I touched up the middle of my lips where some pink was poking through and called it a day.

I’m super surprised by how much I like the metallic grey lips on me. So much so that I might actually have to hunt down an actual metallic grey lip product. My original idea was to do something more silver, but alas, my bright silver eyeshadows were either not lip-safe or unlabelled as to lip safety and a quick google search didn’t turn up anything, so I moved on to the metallic greys. But it was a happy accident, because I think the darker color is probably more wearable than the silver would have been and I totally love it!
